Note the attached:
Every now and then, we find something in the Presidents' files that would probably never be useful in a TIES article....
but it's simply too "neat" to keep hidden.
locked St. Louis line coal train questions
In my research of the St. Louis line, I have seen mention of a coal train 291/292.
From what few pictures and videos I've managed to find, it shows GP39X and GP50s for power with what appears to be 4 bay hoppers. The pictures and videos were taken in 1985/1986.
My questions are as follows:
Was 291/292 around 1980-1982, if so where did it load and unload?
With the exception of the GP39Xs, would this info be revelant for the 1980-early 1982 period?
Does anyone know of a HO-scale model of the 4 bay hoppers?
Did the 360000-series 100-ton cars get used on St. Louis line, if so, from where to where? Train number? Typical power?
locked Construction of Fontana Dam - 1943
Some time ago, I posted the response from Champion Paper when the Southern forwarded the TVA request to suspend operations of the west end of the Murphy Branch for the construction of Fontana dam in 1943.
Here are two letters that preceded Champion's response. (There is probably enough material in the SRHA archives if anyone is seriously interested in writing a TIES article?)
Good Gracious, that is a handsome locomotive!
Thanks to Chris Mayhew

locked Re: Chip Car
Graham County shipped chips to Champion Paper in Canton. I’ve heard, but not verified, 16 of these cars were assigned to this service. Honestly, I find this number to be higher than “logic dictates” since the GC rarely loaded more than 2 cars at a time (based on photos). Even cars in-transit and in-process at the paper mill wouldn’t add up to 16, IMO.
Thanks to everyone involved in the archives scanning project and to those who keep SRHA active and busy. I very much understand the need for SRHA members like me to come down to Chattanooga, and I plan to do that as soon as COVID-19 is over to be part of one of the work sessions.
I've still got a TIES article or two in the works, and I'll have to coordinate with all the above folks to make sure those end up happening and I finish them.
Ike, there sure was a lot of activity between Gest Street, CUT and Ludlow. Southern was the only RR to not have its locomotives and passenger cars regularly services at CUT because of the proximity of Ludlow. If anyone reading this has never visited the area, you can see Cincinnati Union Terminal from Ludlow because it's that close across the Ohio River.
I'm really in the infancy of a possible scanning/archive project for the Cincinnati Railroad Club, but where to locate our archives where it can be more accessible is the real question. So, I really do appreciate what goes into these kinds of efforts.
The CRRC doesn't have a huge set of Southern Railway holdings, but we do have some. Here's a photo I scanned recently from a print loaned to us of a Pacific in Ludlow in 1930.
Cincinnati Railroad Club president
I realize I am constantly promoting the SRHA archives but it is hard for us to explain/show people the different collections we have and what they include. We plan to develop some "Zoom" presentations on various archives topics. Like everything else, help is always needed.
The "research" issue we have is that material on a particular subject may appear in various files. A benefit of scanning as much as possible is that we can organize the scans by subject rather than dig through different collections. Although 2020 has been pretty much a loss as far as work sessions are concerned, both Carl and I have been scanning and organizing files all year. We hope to get back to organized sessions in the second quarter. It is possible for someone to focus on a subject thsat interests them but...they have to get to Chattanooga to help. We will probably organize a "Gathering" at TVRM and the archives this Fall but I expect we will have a number of work sessions when/if the Corona virus gets under control.
With more photos to scan and organize the digital "Photos and Drawings by Location" file has more than 12,650 items (267.5 GB). We are not set up to make copies available but that is one of the projects we want to finish this year.
Here are two items: The first is one of the more than 300 items in the Ludlow, KY "location" file. Note the passenger cars in the 1952 era photo. The Southern's cars to and from CUT were serviced across the river. Moves in and out of Guest St. Yard and CUT must have kept the tracks across the Ohio River busy.
The second item is a partial list of Southern Railway Presidents' files that have been at least partially scanned. It's provided only to show progress, not as a catalogue of available items. Contact us at archives@... if you have a particular interest in a subject.....especially if you are interested in preparing an article for TIES or other publication. (Policies are not firm but it would be helpful if you are a SRHA member.)
PS It's not just my work at the archives! Jim Thurston (the Archives Manager), SR President Carl Ardrey, Rick Bell, Kevin Centers, Bill Schafer, Jim Howe and others are all archives stalwarts. It's all possible because of the cooperation of Tim Andrews and everyone at TVRM.

locked 1 more run of SOU/NS large chip hoppers coming in February
I’ve reached “critical mass” in reservations to justify one more run of the Southern/NS G82/GS50 wood chip hopper. I expect to begin shipments during the first week of February. So far, 30 of the planned 40-45 kits are presold. If you’ve waited until now to make a yes/no “buy” decision, time is running out, so don’t delay further. Last date to make a no-money-required reservation is 12/31/2020. Invoices will be emailed the following week and payment is required before decals are ordered in the 3rd week of January.
Castings left over from production kits will be inventoried and sold off as straggler orders come in. When the last one goes out, there will be no more. The kit will be retired and the body patterns returned to the owner.
You can view details, pricing, etc. here: https://smokymountainmodelworks.com/HO_rolling_stock.html
Contact me off-list to discuss, order, etc. If you’ve not placed a reservation yet nor ordered from me before, please include your snail mail address and the quantity(ies) of kits you want … use the kit numbers shown on the web page linked above.

Any source out there for Asheville Division freight accounts on the Murphy, NC line up to the late 60’s?
I don't know about the Cordele end, but there was a farm fertilizer distributor on the Albany end. It was just on the north side of the liberty express way. I think it closed up in the early 1980's and is completely gone now.toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I don't know if there was any thing north of that.
The Jim Boyd book, "Around Georgia 1968-1970" by Morning Sun books has some stuff about that line as well in it, if memory serves.
locked Chip Car
I grew up in Columbus, GA, and have seen many Southern chip hoppers. I haven't seen one of these, though. Any information on them would be appreciated. I know the cars show up in videos of the Graham County shortline, and some were used on the old Georgia and Florida. Where were they loaded to?
Thanks to Charlie and Dave. I do have the Trains article...I forgot I had it!
There was an excellent article in the April 1969 edition of Trains Magazine by Jim Boyd on the Pidcock lines. It was done shortly after the Southern took over.

I do not, but I recall reading about them somewhere, maybe a Southern Rails or Ties article? I’ll see if I can find it somewhere. Might have been one of my y’all road photo history books though. I couldn’t replace all those after the fire.toggle quoted messageShow quoted text

Do you have the diagram book available? I have a pdf if you need it
1520 and 1523 sit in a series of 69 foot steel cars which were originally built with arched toilet windows. When new they looked generally similar to the old Rivarossi H0 heavyweight coach model but with an extra window on each side, accounting for the extra three feet in length. Both were partitioned cars .
71 came from the series from 68-74 and was a 60 foot steel mail and baggage car and had a 15 foot RPO apartment - just the one window on each side.
373 was originally a 60' wooden car with truss rods but was fitted with steel underframe, electric lighting and steel sheeting below the belt rail in 1923
Hope this helps

My apologies for using the space and bandwidth but this attached letter from the WofA/A&WP provides probably the best explanation of why the they did not want the SF-Washington tourist sleeper included in the consist of train number 38 (Later known as “The Crescent Limited”). Connection times in New Orleans were not (!) the reason…”inferior class of travel” was!
