Actually, FT retirement started in earnest during the 1958 Recession, so you can say that the SD-24's replaced FT's.

Really splitting hairs and getting into semantics on the division between 1st and 2nd generation.
Some sources, like Jack here, put the split between turbo and non-turbo. This doesn't work for ALCOs

Two and one is plan at this point. I’m not sure one Volume will do justice to the butt heads tho’. As with the the cab diesels, we have a lot of data on the conversion from steam to diesel.

Yes turbo's. The GP-20, which Southern did not take, was EMD's initial 4-axle second generation diesel.
Regardless of page count, the SD-24's logically belongs in the second book.

I think you are spot on. It should be broken down into 1st Gen and 2nd Gen Diesel Locomotives and then you could do a more comprehensive review of each group while keeping everyone wanting
