For those who have been waiting 6 (six) months, your wait is just about over.

In just over 3 days, come Saturday and Sunday, October 15-16, 2022, the next Timonium, Maryland train show will be held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds there that weekend. Saturday hours are 9-5 and Sunday 10-4 and your admission on Saturday gets you in free on Sunday.

Just about any railroad you can imagine should be represented in some fashion in print availability for some books or magazines there, not to mention models of all gauges, parts a-plenty, operating modular layouts from various groups and who knows what else might be there?

There will also be a bunch operating modular layouts of all gauges to be enjoyed as well.

Likely railroads to be in greatest representation with material of their operations and existence should be the B&O, PRR, Southern, C&O, Ma & Pa, and who knows what else, right?

Oftentimes various RR historical societies have also been in attendance as well as NRHS chapters. The PRR, B&O, Ma & Pa, and WM railroad groups are among those who have been in attendance in the recent past.

There will also be the usual pink elephant table for selling your stuff (alright, alright, it's the White Elephant table I know, but I couldn't resist), located right in center of the South Hall.

No shortage of parking so that's not a problem either.

Hope to see you there in about 3-4 days by the time you receive this.

Locked Drawings Needing Scanning and Cleaning up at SRHA Archives

George Eichelberger

In addition to the rolling stock drawings and memos typically posted to the Southern.io group, there are many depot and other structure drawings and photos in the SRHA archives. Like everything else, volunteers are needed to help get the material organized.

Recently, we began scanning a series of original drawings from 1947 and 1948 when the Spencer, NC roundhouse was being modified to repair the Southern’s “new” diesels. The attached drawing shows the "Proposed Track Layout for Diesel Repair Facilities in Spencer Rdhse" dated 5-10-1947. The original high resolution scan is full size and nearly 60 MB. This version is smaller than the 35” x 20” scan and much lower resolution so it could be posted.

The next scheduled archives work session is Friday and Saturday, Oct 21 and 22. (The L&NHS archives work session is the same dates.)

Locked Austell tower

Warren Stephens

Does anyone know the year the tower was raised in Austell? There is a restaurant in downtown Austell that has old photos up and one was the Southern interlocking tower. Not the greatest cell phone photo with glass glare etc. An interesting structure nonetheless. And speaking of Austell what year was the depot removed? I assume it was not moved to another location but was simply demolished?

For those who have been waiting 6 (six) months, your wait is just about over. For those with a "Honey Do" list, now is the time to get ready.

In just 10 days, come Saturday and Sunday, October 15-16, 2022, the next Timonium, Maryland train show will be held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds there that weekend. Saturday hours are 9-5 and Sunday 10-4 and your admission on Saturday gets you in free on Sunday.

No shortage of parking so that's not a problem either. So get that Honey Do list done THIS coming weekend.

Hope to see you there in 10 days by the time you receive this.

Class One Models is producing HO Southern Heavy Duty Depressed Center Flat Cars which are lettered in the later block style with the lube bar codes.

These were in the 50000 to 50001 series.  Only the first car 50000 had friction bearings while the others came with Hyatt roller bearings.  Attached is Southern drawing 31-F-79 for reference.

If we can furnish photos or artwork for them as released in 1953 they are interested in producing that style in a later run.

If you would forward materials to me off list I will see that a package gets to them.

Thanks for the help!

Great showing already at the SRHA/L&NHS joint convention/RPM. Took this photo earlier of SRHA’s models that were donated recently by the late Frank Peacock. Many more great models on display added since this photo and great presentations and clinics happening Friday and Saturday. Come on out this weekend!

Would love to see a black Ts with passenger lettering if possible?  I don't have an answer to why Southern used the Ts in freight service.  But I know they B&O used Mountain types in the midwest because of their higher speed over lower driver sized Mikes.

Locked 4-8-2's in freight service

Gary Bechdol

At the very end of steam on Southern, several Ts and Ts-1 4-8-2's were assigned to Chattanooga-Atlanta-Macon freight sevice.  Several, if not all, were equipped with 14,000 gallon tenders from retired Ps-4's, to eliminate intermediate water stops. Does anyone know, or care to speculate, why the 4-8-2's were assigned to this service instead of, say, Ms-4 2-8-2's. also, what type of trains they might have been assigned to.

There was an article in Southern Rails back in the last century covering the Ts's in this service, but I have not been able to locate my copy.  It included several photos of Ts's in freight black, but at least on was black with full passenger lettering and stripping.  Southern's shop forces were a class act all the way to the end.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure how well this quest has gone, but if stencil diagrams are freely available, I don't mind drawing everything needed to create an accurate decal sheet in multiple scales for this locomotive.

Thanks Scott! Never really considered that diesel locomotives tried to keep the dust out of the electrical cabinets, but that makes a lot of sense.

> Followup:1. What's the purpose of the ECAFB? Was air pushed into the cabinet to keep the 60's electronics cool?

It's a second stage of air filtration for the electrical cabinet.  Remember, most of the carbody is slightly pressurized to keep dust out.  The inertial air filter is the loco's primary (first stage) air filter, but it's only about 95% effective on a good day.  A second, large set of filters cleans the engine intake air, but until mid-1967 the electrical cabinet did not have its own filters.  On 40-series EMDs built from mid-67 to 1972, the ECAFB had two tall cylindrical paper filters.  Dash-2s doubled that to four filters.

You told me that SR took the 45xx locomotives in and out of Indiana via the Monon at French Lick.  Were they dead-in-train thru Burton Tunnel?

Have you looked into the book "Rails Around Indiana" by Michael C Kelly & David Crisler Jr.?  There some coverage of the Southern's St Louis Div.  You may be able to glean some additional information to help in your research from the photos and captions.

I researched the St. Louis Div. when SR's archives were in Kennesaw.  I've also researched at the national archives, and at state and local libraries and archives.  I have Harrison's book, ICC's valuation report and other official records.  I wanted to know if there are other resources or people who are interested in the St. Louis Div.

I have a PowerPoint presentation that I've presented several times in IN and KY.

Although it has never been researched in detail, and certainly never published, there is a significant amount of documentation on the St. Louis line in the SRHA archives. The material is not stored on a per-division basis (they changed over the years) so I cannot estimate how much there is but it would certainly be worth someone's time to research and publish the information.

The sets available on ebay in N, HO, and O will work for all C&N-W Alcos. The "Railroad Roman" set is for RS-2's #1-4 and the "Arial" set handles the RS-3's and RS-11. (not quite sure of the font names, but I am close)... Note that these decals are slightly larger in size than they should be, but they are passable
