I am not aware of monthly reports but the SRHA archives contain a significant amount of “coal” related material. The material, MoL, is in three categories; overall Southern coal traffic, coal in SW VA and export coal to the Southern’s pier at Charleston. Studies showing loadings from various mines are included, particularly when the subject is competition from other roads such as the Clinchfield, N&W and L&N. Files include the building of the Clinchfield to compete for southbound coal out of Appalachia, the L&N’s “invasion” of the Tennessee coal fields and the development and traffic to Charleston. Construction of the Charleston pier construction is extensive and includes a full set of construction progress photos. (I did not realize how much of the Southern’s Charleston coal traffic was for “bunker” coal. That is, coal dumped for fuel in ships that were/were not colliers. It was common for a ship to pull up to the coal pier, receive a load of bunker coal, and move on in an hour or so.) Files on the Clinchfield include the details of the construction of the CRR’s tunnel at Spartanburg (before that was built, all CRR traffic was interchanged to/through the Southern there. The development of the Tennessee coal fields are represented in multiple files starting early in the 1900s. The L&N and Southern branches north of Oliver Springs and the development of various “feeder” lines in TN and KY are well covered. As always, I repeat….. There is simply too much material in the SRHA archives and too few people doing the research needed to make use of it. As we move into the new year, if any SRHA member is interested to doing research (on any topic), let us know (archives@...) what you are interested in and we can provide some idea of how well that topic is covered. I’ve attached three samples from the archives….. Got plans for Turkey Day weekend Saturday, November 26th? Train show near Hagerstown, Maryland
Cohen Bob
Hey after a few days with stuffing yourself with good grub and having relatives over you haven't seen in a year or more and gone out shopping, you ARE ready for a nice little train show near Hagerstown, Maryland. That's right, the Antietam Station -
Hagerstown Model RR Museum, Inc. folks are sponsoring their regular Thanksgiving weekend Train Show scheduled for November 26, 2022 at the Washington
County Ag Education Center. This is not far from the Antietam Civil War Battlefield. 7313 Sharpsburg
Pike on Route 65 – 6.1 miles south of
I-70. There is usually a good variety of train related goodies there from Models and parts, timetables, books, magazines, videos, and who knows what else. The hours are 9-1:30 or so and there are dozens of tables to peruse through and get this -- there's door prizes and even burgers and dogs and soft drinks. There is an admission fee and if so inclined, you can drive a mile or so further south and visit the old N&W Antietam Station and see the club's layout and whatever else they have to entertain you. Hope to see you there for it is just over a week away, Thanksgiving weekend Saturday. Bob Cohen |

Preservation Possibility
Don Lewis
The Mt Vernon, Illinois City Council approved making a bid package to demolish the old Southern Depot in town. They claim it is an eyesore and becoming dilapidated. The track it was on was put into service circa 1899 and I think it dates to then. In the
1980s, it was moved off-track and used by the Jaycees until they went under and disbanded. It has been unused since. If there is any interest in trying to restore, salvage, etc. the station, Call City Hall at 618-242-5000. The City Manager is Mary Ellen
Bectel or Mayor John Lewis for contact info.

Re: The latest news for you

George,
No doubt all the coach seats are long gone but I suppose it is possible that they could be re-used as full lounges (premium seating for Georgia trips or other events) or outfit them with table seating to work as table cars for dinner train operation. From what I hear that has been a quite successful operation for the folks at TVRM. Again, I'm glad that they had the opportunity and ability to step up and save them when they had the opportunity.
I volunteer a few hours to the southwest at Heart of Dixie RR Museum in Calera, AL. We had a pair of Hayne shop coaches 1001 and 1005 that former management made (in my opinion) a poor decision to scrap a few years back along with a couple of other cars. I sure wish we still had them.
I do know that one of the two NYC Budd dining cars (grill diner #456) has gone to Western Maryland Scenic where it appears that it will be restored to active service. I have not been inside the car but from what I can tell in the photos it has a remarkably intact interior and kitchen area.
Regards,
-Jason P

Jason: I certainly agree that we want to see Southern Railway rolling stock in service again but consider this: While the cars might (!) be restorable, their condition and missing parts would make that a very expensive project. (... aside $ and from a very busy shop schedule, some of parts that have been removed over the years have helped keep TVRM’s other equipment in service.) I understand two other (NYC?) dining cars from the Choo Choo are going to be moved from Chattanooga and restored to service. Consider that either as places for TVRM (and archives) volunteers to stay overnight, the cars would make it easier for folks to help at TVRM without paying for local hotel nights. I don’t know if the economics of a “public” B&B arrangement would work but that could (!!!) be in their future. (They would be relocated to the area beside the Grand Jct Wye near NS with good views of both operations. If any one is interested in the B&B idea, send me an email and I’ll get it to TVRM management.) Ike PS Note, the Nov. and Dec. archives work sessions have been annulled and replaced with a single session on December 9 and 10 to avoid schedule conflicts with Thanksgiving and Christmas. (Hotel prices in Chattanooga have come down considerably.)

Modeling the Southern.....@ 12"/1'
George Eichelberger
Just like in a Southern modeler’s parts box, only bigger…
The attached photo is the new center plates for NS office car 8 now being restored as Southern OC-21 at TVRM. Each weigh about 385 lbs. They are needed because the private owner of NS-8 sold the pair of six axle swing hanger trucks that Southern bought (1964?) to replace the original Pullman trucks on “Point Richmond” and the trucks TVRM obtained, from NYC business car “Hiram”, are slightly different. (Said to be the last pair of GSC trucks of that type made?) These will allow OC-21 to be placed on the “new” six axle trucks. When that is done, the truck mounted brakes can be connected and the underbody work on the car can be done knowing everything will fit. (Water and toilet holding tanks are fabricated and installed. I’d like to see things like battery box doors hiding the modern equipment under the car. It is what car folks call a “retro mod”. To the degree possible it will look as OC-21 did in the mid 1960s but with features needed to operate today, including 480 volt “HEP”.) Needless to say, this kind of restoration work is expensive. If anyone would like to help get a Southern official car back in service, please make a donation to TVRM. (I’m sure dinner on one of the car’s first trips can be arranged!) Ike |

REA 4-10-57 Order for horse car Warrenville, SC - Washington, DC
George Eichelberger
From the SRHA archives at TVRM:
There are several Railway Express orders for horse cars to and from the Aiken, SC area in the SRHA archives (example attached). None are for Southern horse cars as they had been converted to express only service about 1941. Most are for race horses, some for polo ponies to and from Aiken for “the season”. Ike |

water hatches on Southern steam tenders
Does anyone have photos of the tender water fill hatches on various Southern railway locomotive classes, especially the K, Ks, J, H and E classes?
I don't know that many of the steam articles in TIES or Southern Rails have such photos. I wasn't able to see the 401 in person since it was a part for testing when I visited Monticello, and I haven't been to Spencer since the 542 was restored cosmetically (and that may not have the original tender). Paging through all my Tillotson, Webb, Ranks & Low, Morning Sun Color, and Prince books is unlikely to pull a good image (although I will try).
Any help on photos would be appreciated. I'm sure there are drawings and photos in the archives if I can attend a work session and help out, but I'm unlikely to be able to travel there any time soon, so references to published or easily accessible photos would be greatly appreciated.
This kind of detail doesn't show up in a typical ground level classic 3/4 view.

Southern Railway station lists?
George Eichelberger
Does anyone have a Southern Railway station list that can be scanned, or lent to SRHA to scan?
We have several, in various conditions, but what we need is a searchable text version that can be used as the reference to create a series of soft cover books of depots and structures along various Southern lines. We are in the process of scanning Oscar Kimsey’s (massive) collection of depot photos he accumulated over the years in addition to his copy negatives of the ICC Valuation photos. If folks will help, we can organize the collection milepost by milepost for each Southern line and select which photos, drawings or documents can go into the various books. (There are presently 18,036 individual scans in the “Photos and Drawings by Location” file. Let me know if you are interested. Ike |

Gaithersburg Railroadianna Train show NEXT weekend - November 4-5-6, 2022; Fri-Sat-Sun.
Cohen Bob
Just a little reminder of the Gaithersburg Railroadianna show this coming weekend for 3 exciting days. Okay, if you want to enter during setup times for the dealers to cherry-pick the new goodies, on Friday and Saturday, it's gonna cost you $40 but otherwise Sunday is the usual $10 entry fee I think. Friday setup is 12-5; Saturday 10-4, Sunday for the general public is 9-4. Other than that, timetables, books, magazines, photographs, slides, hardware, of and about railroads and just about any and every railroad for that matter, and other forms of transportation are there to add to your holdings or to offer for sale if you should choose to get a table or two. There will likely be an assortment of models available from a few dealers as well. Railroad china is also likely to be present as well. This is one of the, if not the largest such event of its kind in the mid-Atlantic region for the entire year so in the immortal words "Come on Down ............" and experience the fun and excitement of finding that special something you've been seeking for a while. It's going to be held at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Gaithersburg, Maryland right next to the former B&O rails, Metropolitan subdivision and lots of freight, passenger and commuter train action can be expected. Hope to see you there later this week. Bob Cohen |

Re: Scrapping of Railcars at old Chattanooga Choo Choo complex
George Eichelberger
I expect it is now common knowledge that several of the Southern cars are being moved to TVRM at Grand Junction (planned for this week!)
Long term plans are being developed but, as happens many times, the equipment must be preserved immediately or it would have been scrapped. Not all efforts are successful, the tower from the Choo Choo is a $5,000 pile of bricks at TVRM unless it can be rebuilt. To be clear…I am not an officer of TVRM and have no management responsibility there but I have contributed to various preservation and restoration projects. To quote/reuse a line (not a personal criticism) from the post "….just downright saddens me and disgusts me” also applies to the railfans that have many comments and suggestions about what should be saved, etc., etc. but can’t move off their butts, or checkbooks, to help PAY for preservation projects. TVRM has a small group of people that have been willing to step up when hard cash is needed to keep something from the scrapper. Those people, and the hard work of TVRM employees and volunteers are who make it possible to everyone to see, ride and take photos of 4501, cars painted correctly for Southern or Central of Georgia, etc., etc. (Years ago, five people donated $1,000 each for 4501’s boiler to be tested to determine if it could be restored. Without that effort would 4501 be running today?) In other words…what have YOU done to help funding restoration projects at TVRM, SERM or any of the other well run museums or archives? All welcome donations and YOUR help……get off your butts and checkbooks! Send your hate mail to me off list. I’ll be more than happy to respond. Ike original post from southern-railway-system@groups.io…. Well I guess this shouldn't come as a big surprise to anybody after several years ago they took the control tower down for the terminal, pretty much did away with all the railroad themed items including the operating trolley and kicked the model railroad out. This just downright saddens me and disgusts me. I spent many a day there and the gardens and fountains were always beautiful and the cars were kept up and it was a wonderful place to be and stay in the car rooms. Lately it's gone to s***! https://m.facebook.com/groups/26546024619/permalink/10159487128859620/ I don't know how many cars are being disposed of but I know there's a lot of Southern Railway cars in the complex. It doesn't look good because the track behind these cars used to be full of cars but it is now empty. Sad that the current owner has little regard for history but after years of neglect and not keeping them up it doesn't surprise me! Even the last time I was there part of the platform canopy was falling in and some even taken down. It saddens me so much, I know that it was a long shot for them to continue to exist but at this point greed and money seems to have gotten in the way of anything else, all that matters is the current fads like apartments/condos, escape rooms and a expanding the deck bar. |
