Oscar was such a nice guy to me.  This news is not surprising, but it is sad all the same.

Many of you will not get the reference (back from rec.models.railroad usenet days when "Big John" was alive too), but it seems appropriate here:

"Take yer hat off son, that's the Southern going by."  And this time, the Southern's carrying "OK", so it's alright if your eyes glisten. We'll blame allergy season.

I was just told that Oscar Kimsey passed away a few days ago. His funeral was this afternoon.

"OK", or a circle with a "K" inside was surely one of the giants of southeastern railroad photography. We will publish more in TIES but he told me how his Atlanta newspaper route went near Atlanta Terminal Station during and immediately after the war and how a relative gave him a good quality camera so he was taking important photos at a young(er) age. His friends included all of the well known photographers around the South and he exchanged negatives with photographers all over the country.

SRHA, and people interested in every railroad in the southeast, have Oscar to thank for his many thousands of photos. From the first time he located and called me when we lived in Florida, he was always generous with his (encyclopedic) railroad knowledge and photos. (The Southern 40' box car book would never have been published with access to his collection.)

His entire collection is at the SRHA archive at TVRM. We will continue to use and publish his work, always with a credit to "OK".

When the Augusta area was in my sales territory, I would frequently spend an evening visiting with Oscar.  It was invariably an entertaining visit.

Oscar was very generous in allowing the use of many of his photos in my books.  In fact, the last time I spoke with him it was regarding the use of some of his material in a book that is currently in the works.  He did not hesitate to grant permission to use it.

Yessir.  Stand and uncover.  Oscar's leaving.

moderated Depot paint

milepost 131 <mp131.ghandrews@...>

I have more questions than answers when it comes to depot painting.

Depot painting:

the “best” documentation I’ve found is in Wiley’s book

Exterior

1925 – standardized green (similar to CNW green) window frames and doors yellow (similar to UP)

1945 medium gray with white trim

next paint- all gray

So that is a summary of Wiley’s knowledge.

When they started the “Montpelier Station” (VA) restoration they performed mass spec analysis. (I have a copy somewhere if anyone wants that drop me a note off-list)

I’ve examined period postcards and B&W images

it seems that there were depots with “yellow” (lighter color) above the “band” that was at window sill height- and green (below) Trim white. No doubt pre-1925 but some seem to have maintained That scheme after 1925 or maybe weren’t painted. <g>

I’m MOST interested in depots along the Murphy Branch and offer the following:

Addie (1963 Marsh) gray white trim

Andrews 1967 gray gray trim

early Balsam (two tone with white trim)

Balsam (1959-61 King) gray white trim

Bryson City (1975 King) white/tan brown trim

Bushnell photo (Clodfelter around 1920) is two tone with white trim

Bushnell (1943 TVA) green (maybe) white trim

Canton (early 1900’s King) yellow above, green below, white trim

Nantahala 1950 gray white trim

Whittier (early) two tone with white trim

So…. Since I model 1943 (specifically) I could guess “two tone/white trim

but even then I wonder whether it was always that.

I also have lots of questions about the depot at Bryson City:

Now the GSMRR own this structure and we know they have modified it and the freight section was modified earlier. And for me the back side (non-trackside) is critical as this shows on my layout.)

Backside It has several windows and a door that I question whether they are mods after 1943. I’ve yet to find any “floor plan” for Bryson City or photos of the back (RR folks always like the track <G>)

I’ll guess that this depot goes back to “WNCRR” days and have yet to discover any WNCRR documentation that would help with my mysteries.

Now all of that being said… I mentioned post cards. I’ve seen quite a few postcards of depots with the early “two tone” but even with that info we must remember… postcards were often created overseas and colors added or modified before printing by employees who might have never seen the depot.,

Anyone have any factual info to share?
I

moderated Southern Budd Dining Car 3307

George Eichelberger

TVRM is in the process of purchasing Southern Budd dining car 3307 from Amtrak. The car is in basically the same condition as it was in Southern Railway service and will be shipped to TVRM in Chattanooga shortly. (An article will follow in TIES in the next couple of issues.) Purchasing 3307 by TVRM will preserve an interesting and important piece of Southern rolling stock that also makes business sense as the car will provide revenue from kitchen and dining car seating with other dining cars or in an all-Southern lightweight train consist.

The cost to purchase and move the car, plus two more non-Southern cars being donated to TVRM, is $35,000. If anyone is interested in helping, please consider donating to the purchase and moving cost. There is a "donation" section on the TVRM web site, https://www.tvrail.com/support-tvrm/donate. Contact me off list if I can help with any more information.

In addition to the Amtrak cars, two Southern low side gons have been purchased and will be trucked to Chattanooga. Both will be restored to full Southern paint and lettering and used in MoW service and photographers specials. After TVRM looking, for many years, to acquire a Southern business car, two (!) have become available at reasonable cost. With TVRM member and other donors' assistance, the museum will attempt to purchase both. As we all realize, as time passes obtaining Southern railway rolling stock that can be restored to museum quality become more difficult.

For anyone interested in preserving the history of the Southern, now is the time, and here is the opportunity!

Ike,

If I can assist TVRM with any 3D CAD or possibly wire EDM work, please let Tim Andrews know.

Yours,

Dave

moderated N&W 475 + Silverside gon

Jim King

A couple months ago, there was a discussion of a pic showing a Silverside gon coupled to an N&W tender.  This is what the tender belonged to.  Note the N&W GP9 in the background and the Silverside coupled to the tender.  This was taken 9/3/60 in Bristol VA during an NRHS convention.  I have this neg.  Notice the steps to the cab for those wanting to see inside the cab.  Since this discussion surfaced, I found an ebay slide of a NRHS convention train w/b at the Abingdon station … 2 Redbird GP9s and a long train … headed to Bristol on 9/2/60 for the convention.

N&W 475 may have been run to Bristol from Roanoke under steam since steam ended only 6 months earlier in Williamson WV.  475 was dressed up for the famous 1957 NRHS tripleheader to Blacksburg and later stored in Roanoke in this dress.  It now runs at Strasburg minus some of the glitz.

So, for those naysayers who poo-poo that a Silverside could never have been coupled to N&W steam or have even run on N&W trackage, this photo proves otherwise.  This was shot near the 2-story yard office which is in Virginia and on the N&W.

moderated Southern Steam Locomotives - Bluemont Branch

Kenneth W McIlvoy <theashcat@...>

I am researching the Southern steam locomotives used in Virginia on the Bluemont Branch (later Washington & Old Dominion Railroad) during the period of the 1894-1912 lease of that line.  Does anyone have a picture of any of the following locomotives that were assigned to that line:

2-8-0 #3, 76, 77,120, 151, 181

4-6-0 #920, 923, 924, 925, 3310, 3337

0-6-0 #1550

Thanks

Just remember, the lease began in 1885 or 1886 when the Richmond & Danville first leased it. When the Danville came out of receivership in June 1894, it then PURCHASED the line outright and owned it and operated it until July 1, 1912 when it was leased to the W&OD. The W&OD did not actually purchase the line from Southern until around 1945, if memory serves me correctly.

We have mentioned the rare and unusual items to be found in the SRHA archives before. Here is an example of "unusual". Why the Southern prepared a drawing (attached) of the
the trees in Lafayette Park (directly across Pennsylvania Ave. from the White House) is unknown. The Southern Railway headquarters building (sold) is to the left.

If anyone is interested in working on a TIES article related to any of the contracts that have been scanned, we can attempt to locate a corresponding Presidents file at the June work session. At last weekend's work session, I was pleased to find a number of files that corresponded to the different contracts. A new list of scanned contracts will be posted next week.

If anyone is interested in working on a TIES article related to any of the contracts, we can attempt to locate a corresponding Presidents file at the June work session. Please contact me off list at archives@...

While it is hard to predict how much research time anyone can spend in the archives during the SRHA convention, everyone is welcome to come to the archives "grand opening" at 10:00AM Saturday the 1st of June. Convention details are ln the SRHA web site at www.srha.net.

In 40 years with Amtrak I was at the beautiful Southern Railway headquarters many times.  It doesn’t surprise me that they would have drawings of nearby parks. They were just very detail-oriented people.

After NS moved out of the building, the people that purchased it contacted us for help with Southern Railway photos, maps, etc. to put in the lobby to recognize the history of the building. We sent them a good selection but the owner decided not to follow up.

Here are two photos from the archives:

Perhaps more interestingly is where SR was located prior to this building, and why they relocated. The basics are fairly well-known (well, okay, maybe not THAT well-known) but where they were located is. Now there is a story: why did SR move after the big fire in their former HQ which I think was around 1925 if memory serves me and not rebuild just on the same site?

Bob:

At first, I thought you were talking about NYC before Sam Spencer and the headquarters moved to DC. Yes, there is a time “gap” between the move and the new building. I have not “stumbled” on a Presidents’ file about the new building but certainly, one exists. Perhaps the following Presidents’ files for Fairfax Harrison in the 1926 finding aids are a clue?

There are finding aids for every year of every Southern Railway President. The work was done by Ms. Sallie Loy with support from a grant from Norfolk Southern while Wick Moorman was President. SRHA cannot thank NS and Sallie enough for the effort! We need volunteers to revisit and update all of our finding aids. We can work with local university students if a grant can be obtained to pay them and for archives supplies.

The mystery and curiosity of mine is, after the disastrous fire, why did the SR not rebuild on the same site, albeit with a new structure, etc.? That is my mystery inquiry on this issue. The fire was well-documented at the time in the DC newspapers, occurring only a few blocks from the Washington Evening Star HQ building at the corner of 11th & Penna. Ave., NW.

Right after I hit send, a light dawned and here is perhaps why it wasn't rebuilt there: it was at the western end of the dawning Federal Triangle and perhaps the DC Commissioners, appointed by the President of the US, enticed SR in some way to build elsewhere closeby. Now the fact that the old SR site was not built upon until 60 or 70 years later is another story, but the Federal Triangle idea of government buildings located between Penna Ave. and Constitution Ave. and 6th to 15th Streets is a fact and today, the FTC, Archives, Dept. of Justice, IRS, Post Office (now converted into a hotel), ICC, Reagan Building, Commerce Department/s, all occupy that triangle ...... and a lot more in DC, but perhaps that was the reason for the relocation.

Who knows and yes, it might be buried in the Fairfax Harrison files somewhere in correspondence.

Bob:

We could use a time line….

When did the Southern move from NYC to DC,
Where was their first headquarters in Washington,
“a few blocks from” does not sound like 1300 PA Ave,
was “near the newspaper” before or after 1300?

It’s time to hit the Prez files!

The Southern Railway Building is on the national historic register, and the park service has a web page about it: https://www.nps.gov/nr/feature/places/16000194.htm

According to that, the original building at the corner of 13th and Pennsylvania Ave. burned in 1916. It was replaced on site, but was demolished 10 years later for construction of the Federal Triangle. The "new" headquarters at 15th and K was built in 1928-29.

I need to sell some of my Southern Railway & other south eastern railway books.

These include, but not limited to Southern Steam Locomotives & Boats by Richard E. Prince, Southern Steam Power by Harold E. Ranks & Shelby F. Lowe.  This book is autographed by Shelby Lowe.  I also have at least a dozen more books.  Is anyone interested?
