Locked SRHA Archives Structures and Rolling Stock Photo Collection
George Eichelberger
There are many thousands of photo prints, 35mm slides and original negatives in the SRHA archives. Although many have been scanned, there are thousands more to be done before we will be able to search, print and use the collection easily and with a good chance we have a requested subject.
Although we cannot simply send negatives off for someone to scan, we can keep a couple of high resolution scanners busy during archives work sessions. To use the collection for more TIES articles and individual copy requests, we need volunteers!
In addition to photos by many well known photographers, the archives include many good quality copy negatives of structures and depots from the ICC Valuation study began in 1916. Current plans are to research and publish photos following various Southern Railway lines, probably starting with the āSā line from Salisbury, NC, through Asheville to Knoxville, TN. The books will include track charts, structure drawings, photos and data from the ICC records and Southern AFEs (Authorization for Expenditures) in milepost order to follow the routes from end to end. (The S Line will probably need to be split into two books as there is so much material available for that and every line segment.)
Timing depends on how much help we have!
Ike
PS The Camden Jct., SC photo below is an example of one of the Oscar Kimsey, Jr. copy negatives from the Southern Railway ICC Valuation reports files. (Photos appear to have been lost or destroyed by Sou/Norfolk Southern after they were copied by Oscar and Ben Roberts in Atlanta years ago.))
