Locked K-4 Southern Twin Hoppers

George Courtney

Anyone able to speak to how accurate the K-4 decals are for Southern's twin hoppers.  K-4 list them starting with the numbers 30, iirc.  like 303864.  I'm looking at the black twin hoppers around 1950-53,

Thanks,
George Courtney

George,

You might also consider the ones made by Mt Vernon Shops. You can find them here.  They are shown in black for clarity but come in white.

I cannot comment on which are better, these or the K4, but hope that others more knowledgeable than me may enlighten us.

Modeling the Southern in 1955 in HO Scale

George, what type of 2 bay hoppers are you trying to decal?  The offset side cars were 285500-285999; 112500-113249;320100-320699.  There were also rib side 2 bay hoppers and War Emergency hoppers that were 2 bay.  I'm sure the K4 set will work if you get the right series and car type. Mt Vernon shops might be a good source also, as Allen mentions in his reply.
A photo of the car or class you want to model is a good starting point.  Either on line or Bob's photos @ (606)748-1811.
Let me know if you need anything else.

George, I have used K4's O-scale, SR hopper decals and consider them quite good. They are specific to the 2-bay offset-side cars, but do not include the small lettering for subsidiary roads which was painted in the upper right sides of those cars, although K4 has promised to include that lettering on future runs of the decals. -Ed Burnett, Lynchburg, Virginia

Thanks to all who replied.  I couldn't confirm that they had a series of 55 top twin hoppers beginning with 32.... numbers.  I'm S scale so K-4 is the only option. The replies were very helpful.

George:

The Southern Railway Freight Equipment Diagram Book,  Volume 1, available from the SHRA, shows car numbers 320100-320699 to be 50 ton, 33 ft. Offset side steel hoppers built in 1940 by Pullman Standard Car Co.  The same diagram also covers series 112500-113249 and series 285500-285999.
