The Mt Vernon, Illinois City Council approved making a bid package to demolish the old Southern Depot in town.  They claim it is an eyesore and becoming dilapidated.  The track it was on was put into service circa 1899 and I think it dates to then.  In the 1980s, it was moved off-track and used by the Jaycees until they went under and disbanded.  It has been unused since.  If there is any interest in trying to restore, salvage, etc. the station, Call City Hall at 618-242-5000.  The City Manager is Mary Ellen Bectel or Mayor John Lewis for contact info.
