Locked SOUTHERN 44 Ton Switcher Phase Question
Looking for PHASE classifications for SOU 44 Ton switchers 1950 to 1953.
Rapido has announced these but they are in the tuxedo scheme so I am planning to buy an undecorated and paint it green.
Their undecorated options are:
Phase 1c
Phase III
Phase IVa
Would these match any of the Southern switchers? I checked the Wither's book but Phase info was not listed.

Try to find an old Extra 2200 magazine. I’m sure they did phases with an early roster. Curt Fortenberry On Thu, Jan 26, 2023 at 1:55 PM Allen Cain <Allencaintn@...> wrote: Looking for PHASE classifications for SOU 44 Ton switchers 1950 to 1953. |

2200 Extra South magazine, issues 51 and 52 from 1975. Covered the phases (often a railfan term). I believe the 7 Southern units may have had some variations in details but you’d need to check photos. Dave Sent from Dave Bott's iPhone On Jan 26, 2023, at 5:55 PM, Allen Cain <allencaintn@...> wrote:

I have issues 51 and 52 (1975) of 2200 Extra South magazine. We found the following information in issue 51: Phase Ib (delivered 4-12-41) Chattanooga Traction Co. #2 became Sou Rwy #1954 in 1947. Phase IIa (delivered 1-6-44) Chattanooga Traction Co. #3 became Sou Rwy #1955 in 1947. Phase IVa (delivery 3-45 to 3-49) Sou Rwy #1950, #1951, #1952, #1953; #6520 (AGS), #6840 (NO&NE), #6010 (CNO&TP) Thanks. L. Gerald Robinson

Rapido is offering #'s 1950, 1951, and 1953 in phase III. There may only be subtle differences in the phases. The designation of phases was solely a creation of Extra 2200 magazine for railfans and locomotive historians. Not saying it's wrong, just take it as a reference point. Curt Fortenberry |

What “phase” was the Chattanooga Traction Company 44 ton switchers? I always wondered what was meant by the term phase? I never realized it was simply made up railfan lingo.

Disregard that Chattanooga Traction question. I see the answer in another reply.

The phases were what Extra was trying to distinguish between visual differences in production runs, such as the GP7/9 that were produced over a number of years. Some were very noticeable, thus phases 1,2, 3, etc, then subtle within, a,b,c. Curt Fortenberry On Tue, Jan 31, 2023 at 12:20 PM Warren Stephens <wdstephens@...> wrote:

I always thought that the phases were assigned by X2200 South to distinguish between changes, mainly in appearance. It could have been as simple as adding extra louvers to a car body to something more significant like a different cab design. All of this was done to differentiate units when the builder didn't change the actual modal number.

Does anyone have good color photos of the Southern 44 tonners ? I’m particularly interested in the green paint scheme but would also love to see black units.

Multiple photos of the 44T GEs are in the draft of the “Southern Diesel Switch Engines” book. Until we can get that finished/published, here is a smaller, low-res copy of drawing DL-6037.

If anyone can help us obtain a good quality plotter, we will make drawings available.
