Locked Southern Railway Books - specifically the Prince book
Cohen Bob
Of the 10 or 11 different RR's that Richard Prince did way back when, not counting the 4 reprints, the Southern one is by far the most common and prevalent from what I see at shows. I have at least one for sale at $75.
One neat thing about the Prince books though, and I would say this about all of them, they have withstood the test of time and for the most part he got his info and data right, and when done, it was in an era when errors were far too prevalent. The sad thing about the reprints is that one of the 4, the NC&St.L one was THE rarest of the bunch, but that was all changed when the reprints came into being. Let's not even get started into the photo quality 20 years ago on the reprints, for the originals were not that great to start with, but the info is sound overall. Bob Cohen At the Richmond, Va. show this past weekend, I sold one of the Prince RF&P books, one of the more popular ones one sees out there. Bob Cohen |

SRHA has the Richard Prince files and the copyright. Many of the photos and negatives he used in his books were borrowed and returned to their owners. In some cases, we have other copies of the same images or an equal or better replacement. When Indiana University called me a number of years ago and asked to reprint the Southern book, I said “yes” if we could correct some of the book's errors. All they wanted to do was photo copy and print as published so I said “no”. All of the various hand written charts, correspondence and remaining photos are in the SRHA archives and will be useful creating a new SR steam book. Ike PS We have mentioned this before but it’s worth re-telling…. While he was a student at GA Tech in 1941, Prince went to Augusta for some rail photography and was arrested for taking train pictures in wartime. He wrote the Augusta PD attempting to have his film returned (no word on the result) and “complimented” them on the ham salad sandwich they fed him while he was in jail. The Augusta PD reference got our attention because Rick Bell, a SRHA Director, is retired from that same department. PPS I realize I “harp” on the subject quite often but organizing, and using, the material in the archives takes time, effort and even some expense. Anyone is welcome to help with any of that. The Richard Prince book copies were not truly reprints, but copies of the first books, literally a copy. That's why the photo quality was much less. Curt Fortenberry |
